The Gilded Cage Interviews with leading historians, archive footage and dramatic reconstruction reveal the childhoods of Tsar Nicholas II's four daughters - Olga, Tatiana, Maria and Anastasia - and the truth behind the fairytale images. The sisters were the most photographed princesses of their day, attracting the same frenzied press attention as Princess Diana later would, but their public profile masked the reality of their strange and very isolated upbringing. No wonder the Russians, who adore children, have deified them. Had the father lived for another quarter-century at best then he might have steered Russia in a better direction during WWI...perhaps even prevented the Civil War from happening. That way, when he died, his son would have been fully trained for his role as Tsar. Nicholas II would have properly understood the workings of government and Empire and so would have continued the legacy his father had left to him during peacetime... She was very hands on when they were young, but worry and stress wore her down plus she did have royal duties, albeit perhaps not as much as she could have. The notes from the girls show that they missed her when she was ill because they were accustomed to having her around. Give the woman a break. Homesickness and fear can kill a person. I think she was very strong minded and at least her girls were well behaved and loving, unlike the brats of today. Even Davinchi himself had said children were rebelling and disrespecting their parents, and he was born in the 1400s, years before this. Reply 9 El Fr El Fr1 month ago Alexandra was portrayed negatively in this doc, although it's good. She had her daughters in quick succession, leading to physical restraint as each birth was harder than the previous. The birth of four daughters put more restraint on her since she had no heir. Then came Alexei, who had haemophilia, and added mental stress as she worried 24/7 over his health. It is stated that her hair began to turn grey after Alexei, and her youth deteriorated. She was only in her thirties at this time. Russia disliked her, Rasputin was fuel to the fire. Nothing could be explained about him: Alexei's haemophilia was a secret, so conspiracies rose and Rasputin's acts out of the palace were controversial enough. They even get emotional about their inputs and it makes them less credible because their inputs are obviously no longer objective. Maybe not factual anymore, even. Yes, he was really spoiled, but in a way, his story is the most tragic of them all. He was so restricted from everything, trapped in a prison of his family's adoration and worry, and then to have his life snuffed out at such a young age without having much of a chance to do much with it. he must have felt so trapped by his disease and and pain Read more Reply 136 Ali Hamza Ali Hamza2 months ago Dayo Olorunnisola Reply 1 Isprikitik burkabush Isprikitik burkabush1 year ago They're really trying hard on that Russian accent Reply 126 Dimitri James Dimitri James1 year ago she starts off by saying the girls names may not be remembered and then goes on to say in russia they are worshiped as saints. come on Reply 816 View all 62 replies Fantasy Universe Fantasy Universe8 months ago i get to know of this story through disney's anastasia cartoon.. and it totally got me interested in this real life imperial family and its stories.. Reply 14 Luboman411 Luboman4117 months ago Commendable family life. Love the fact that they lived so humbly considering their vast wealth. But damn, having a happy family life should not have been even close to the Tsar's most important concerns. He had absolute power over an immense and fast-changing empire where he and he alone was the "buck stops here" guy. The last thing one does in that situation is to build an isolated, cozy, middle-class existence. Nicholas II needed to be out there, along with his wife, measuring the pulse of what was going on, building a power base, spearheading badly-needed reform after reform, working himself ragged, like the best CEOs, Presidents and, yes, Emperors. Catherine the Great and Peter the Great both had been crazy workaholics. He sounded like he didn't do much work considering all that had to be accomplished to keep Russia together. This would explain why the whole damn thing fell apart during his watch, directly leading to the deaths of his beloved family and the deaths of millions, and the ascent to power of the bloodthirsty Bolsheviks.
